Primary biliary cholangitis
The following needs assessment will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune cholestatic liver disease that predominantly affects women. It is characterized by the slowly progressive destruction of interlobular bile ductules, which can eventually lead to cholestasis, cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and death. Globally, 1 in 1,000 women over the age of 40 are estimated to live with PBC. In Canada, it is estimated that over 11,000 people are affected by this disease, which ranks this country amongst the highest worldwide for PBC prevalence.
Due to recent advances in disease management, along with the importance of a life-long and individualized approach to care for patients with PBC, there is a significant need to provide high-quality physician education that will facilitate optimal patient outcomes.
This needs assessment represents the first step in designing a relevant evidence-based education program in PBC for Canadian physicians.
